Bruno Leti, ‘Exactitude’: Works of the ‘80s and Beyond

Exhibition opening with the participation of the artist. Exactitude (esattezza) is the third of Italo Calvino’s seminal Six Memos for the Next Millennium (Lezioni americane. Sei proposte per il prossimo millennio), written in 1985 and first published in 1988. The other memos are lightness (leggerezza), quickness (rapidità), visibility (visibilità), multiplicity (molteplicità) and consistency (coerenza). Leti is an Australian artist with deep, multi-faceted connections – both biographical-existential as well as artistic and cultural – to the Italian tradition. These connections include ongoing thoughtful dialogues with Italian art and literature – both classical and contemporary. Well-known art historian Sasha Grishin AM FAHA has addressed Leti’s oeuvre from the viewpoint of Calvino’s Memos in his 2002 monograph Bruno Leti: Six memos on the art of Bruno Leti. The result opens amazingly fertile vistas on Leti’s work, including those further explored in this exhibition in connection with the value of exactitude – a quality that turns out to be implicated in artistic intuition more deeply than one may think. Born in Roccantica, near Rome, Leti grew up in central Italy. He moved to central Victoria with his family at the age of 10. After studying Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne, RMIT and Melbourne Teachers’ College, followed by a period of international travel, Leti taught art for several years. Leti is now a full-time art-maker, working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and book-arts. An award-winning artist, Leti has been resident artist in many institutions in Australia and internationally, including Grafica-Uno in Milan and the British School in Rome. He is represented in most State, regional and tertiary collections in Australia, as well as in important collections in the USA, Germany, Italy, Britain and Japan.
